Below are lists of books and links with further in-depth information about our area. Some of the books are available at the Pirongia Historic Visitor's Centre and the Persimmon Tree cafe.

Books

Day Walks of Waikato and King Country, by Sonia Frimmell
This book provides clear, concise and informative descriptions of walks throughout this large area and is illustrated with maps and photographs. The guide is written for visitors as well as residents and offers: an introduction to the region's geology, forests and history; walks divided into sections with maps and interesting overviews; grades of difficulty, completion times, access details, track notes and points of interest. The two booklets described below are available from the Pirongia Historic Visitor Centre, Persimmon Tree Cafe, Pirongia Art and Craft Shop and the Te Awamutu Visitor Information Centre.

Mount Pirongia
The Pirongia Forest Park booklet is published by Pirongia Te Aroaro o Kahu Restoration Society whose focus is the ecological restoration of the mountain.  The booklet is attractive, informative and useful and includes sections on history, Maori folklore, walking tracks, a map and information about wildlife - both native wildlife and also introduced pests.

Historic Alexandra
The Historic Alexandra booklet is a guide to historic sites in Pirongia Village. This booklet is published by the Pirongia Historic Visitor Centre and includes interesting historical information about the settlement of Alexandra (later renamed Pirongia). The booklet is illustrated with old maps and photos. Details of 37 sites of historical interest in the village are included along with a map showing their location.
